Gum or Periodontal Disease is the disease of the tissues surrounding the teeth, which includes the gum tissue and the supporting bone. Initial stages, where only the soft tissue is affected is called Gingivitis, and it can be easily reversed. Once the supporting bone for the teeth is affected, then it is called Periodontitis. Periodontitis can be further classified as mild, moderate and severe, depending on the degree of bone-loss. Mild Periodontitis can usually be treated quite easily, but it is the moderate and severe types that are more challenging to treat. They may require more technologically advanced treatment modalities.
Unfortunately, most people do not. It is because at its initial stages, gum disease is completely painless. Usually the first sign is some bleeding during routine brushing and flossing.
Call us for an appointment and usually, only a thorough professional cleaning along with a more diligent home care routine will solve the problem. If the gingivitis is on the moderate to severe side, a technique called “Laser Assisted Pocket therapy” may be needed.
You will need regular (more often than patients without gum disease), thorough, professional cleanings along with possibly other treatments.
